How Did "The God of the Woods" by Liz Moore End?

What Are the Twists and Spoilers?

The big mystery * drum roll* - - Who killed Bear Van Laar?

No one. It was actually an accident. When Alice was drunk after finding her husband and sister sleeping together, she asked Bear to go out on a boat with her. To keep Bear safe, his grandfather asked him to go on a hike instead. When Bear did not meet him for a hike, his grandfather figured out that he had likely gone after his mom, Alice. Peter II dives into the water and finds that Bear has drowned. Alice is understandably hysterical; Victor and Peter II decide to drug her and keep her in the apartment above the slaughterhouse. They do not want the truth to come out because it will make the family look unstable, thus eroding their family's reputation and most importantly, to them, the trust in their bank.

What about Jacob Sluiter?

It wasn't him! But he did know where Bear's body was buried. Jacob had been hiding in the woods near the camp at the time, and he happened to see Victor take Bear's body to a cavern to bury it.

Who murdered Barabara Van Laar?

Again, no one. At the end of the novel, we shift to Barabara's perspective and find out that she is living in a cabin owned by T.J. in the middle of the woods. Barabara and TJ planted her bloody clothes, from the camping knife accident in John Paul's car to make him look like a suspect. Barbara plans to live in the woods until she is eighteen. Judyta puts the pieces together and suspects that Barbara is in the woods, so goes to confirm and finds her. However, Judyta decides not to reveal Barbara's secret to anyone.
