How Did "The Crash" by Freida McFadden End?
What Are the Twists and Spoilers?
First things first, Hank takes Tegan to the hospital THANK GOD
Tegan is convinced that Hank is the problem - not Polly - so, when Hank grabs Tegan from the basement saying that they need to hurry to the hospital before Polly comes back, she doesn’t believe him. Tegan tries to get the attention of other drivers as they head out certain that Hank is taking her to a remote location. When they arrive at the hospital Tegan is shocked when Hank tells her that Polly is actually a “good person” and nurse. He asks Tegan not to ruin Polly's life.
Polly finds out Hank took Tegan to the hospital
Polly was at the pharmacy to pick up a prescription for antibiotics and a blood thinner to try to improve Tegan's condition. When Polly gets back and finds that Tegan is gone she searches frantically. She finds Hank in the living room and he tells her that he took Tegan to the hospital.Hank tries to comfort Polly but she runs to their bedroom and locks the door. Hank tells Polly that if she does not unlock the door he will call 911. He is rightfully concerned that Polly will commit suicide as she had threatened to do if Hank took Tegan to the hospital.
Tegan's car was tampered with
We find out that Tegan and her baby will be okay. We also find out through her doctor that her car was tampered with before her accident. Tegan’s brother arrives to comfort her as well as Jackson, the lawyer she had become close with while working on a settlement. Jackson apologizes for the way he reacted when Tegan told him she was raped by Simon.
Polly heads to the hospital
Putting on an old pair of scrubs, Polly waits until Hank leaves her unattended and heads to the hospital with a pair of scissors. When she arrives she has an old badge and gets in, she also puts on a surgical mask which hides her face.
Jackson and Dennis have a strange interaction
After apologizing Jackson says that he has something he needs to tell Tegan, seemingly referencing the phone call that was cut off right before the accident. While initially the vibes from Jackson scare Tegan, the tension between Jackson and Dennis makes her very wary. It feels as though the two men know each other and Tegan feels less suspicious of Jackson and more of her brother.
Polly finds Tegans room and discovers Tegans brother trying to add a syringe of medicine to her IV
While Polly had initially gone there to kill Tegan, she reacts to seeing the brother, Dennis, and asks him what he is doing. When Dennis runs off he runs into Jackson who states that he knew that it was him that “did it”, referencing the car tampering. The brother is taken away and Polly leaves the hospital, ironically likely having saved Polly’s life. Dennis was trying to give Tegan a lethal dose of morphine. Tegan realizes that Polly saved her life.
The police speak with Tegan and confirm her brother tampered with her car
The police tell Tegan that Dennis insisted that Tegan visit him and then removed tread from her tires so that she would not be able to drive safely in the storm. Simon and Dennis were business partners, creating new ski resorts and Simon had made it clear to Dennis that if his sister went to the police to report her rape, the deals would not go through. Tegan believes that Dennis felt justified in cooperating because he blamed her for the car accident that ended his professional skiing career.
Tegan was not Simon's first victim
Jackson tells Tegan that after she told him she was raped by Simon he contacted another woman that they had paid off. She told Jackson that she was also raped by Simon. Jackson continues to apologize for his terrible reaction to their initial conversation about the rape. Jackson was calling Tegan to tell her that he was going to the police when their phone call disconnected shortly before the accident.
Polly and Hank leave the hospital and find police cars when they arrive home
Polly is glad that she did not follow through on her plan to kill Tegan. She realizes that her family is complete with Hank. When they arrive home, they find police cars at ther neighbors house and Polly is worried for Sadie. The police tell them that their neighbor, Mitch, fell down the stairs while drunk and then suffocated in the snow. Sadie is safe and the police are working on getting her to a foster family.
Tegan has her baby and Jackson arranges for Simon to pay child support
While Tegan is definitely traumatized by what happened, she has decided not to tell the police about what happened with Hank and Polly. Jackson regularly visits Tegan and also made sure that Simon has begun paying her child support. She is able to hire help to assist her when she goes home as she is still recovering from her foot injury.
Polly sends Tegan a gift
When Jackson gives Tegan a teddy bear for her daughter he realizes that she has already received one. Jackson opens the card and reads a message from Polly to Tegan, wishing her and her daughter the best. Polly had received a bear from Hank when she believed she was pregnant years ago, and as a symbolic gesture she sent one to Tegan. Tegan is justifiably spooked by the gift and reminder of the horror she endured in their basement. Jackson asks Tegan who Polly is and Tegan lies saying she does not know.
The last chapter is a year forward jump epilogue
Tegan still experiences pain and a limp from her ankle injury. Jackson has been helping her remodel a tome home she purchased for her and her daughter. She still has not told the police about Hank and Polly and has reframed them as people who saved her life. Her brother is serving time in prison and has sked for her forgiveness. Dennis claims that he did not think the tire tampering would kill Tegan, and also insisted that she bring her flask to make the accident look like it was related to drinking. Jackson and Tegan seem like they are developing a romantic relationship but are taking it (painfully) slowly. Polly and Hank have adopted Sadie.
Hank pushed their neighbor, Mitch, down the stairs
While searching for Polly after she went to the hospital to try to kill Tegan, Hank went to their neighbors house to look. Hank found Mitch and his daughter, Sadie. Sadie was covered in bruises from Mitch. In anger, Hank pushed Mitch down the stairs. When Mitch begins to get up he is furious and Hank is worried for Sadie's life. He pushes Mitches face back into the snow suffocating him. Sadie sees Hank do this, and Hank tells her to call 911, knowing that she will likely tell the police that he murdered Mitch but she chooses not to and says instead that Mitch must've tripped and fallen.
